Active optical elements, such as digital micro-mirrors-, acousto-optical- and liquid-crystal- based spatial light modulators, permit laser light to be spatially redistributed by introducing a controlled modulation of its phase and/or amplitude. Their active nature allows illumination patterns to be rapidly and straightforwardly adapted to experimental needs. The past few years have been characterized by the emergence of a number of new microscopy techniques based on these devices, with applications ranging from optical manipulation to patterned photoactivation, adaptive optics and super resolution microscopy.

The symposium « Optical Microscopy in Good Shape », organised in the framework of the Network of European Neuroscience Institutes (ENI-net), will bring together physicists and neuroscientists to emphasize the contribution of these new microscopy techniques to life science and to stimulate collaborations between the two research communities. It will be composed of 4 sessions:
